Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Gamestop pondering a move into vintage games

Gamestop pondering a move into vintage games

GameStop CEO Paul Raines is planning on adding a vintage games store to the company's online offerings. The outlet has been amassing warehouses full of classic titles that were traded in over the years, and the chief sees a "sales opportunity" in going toe-to-toe with sites like eBay. There are still several problems to overcome, including conditioning, sourcing and refurbishing the hardware abused by our younger selves -- but at least we might be able to replace our busted SNES controllers without worrying about getting outbid at the last minute.

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web

flickr
It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:
  • Share from Photo page: There's a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.
  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn't sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you're so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).
That's the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Gnome-flavored Ubuntu desktop environment coming for purest purists

Gnome

If you're a Linux user squarely in the Gnome desktop camp and sneer with disdain at the mention of Unity, there's good news -- your preferred flavor is coming, uncontaminated, to Ubuntu. Though "GNOMEBuntu" was originally floated as a name for the new environment, that idea was apparently kiboshed by the Gnome Foundation, leaving "GNOBuntu" and "Gnubuntu" as possible monikers, according to Mutkware. Neither Unity, nor cloud service Ubuntu One will be included in the distro, but you'll find a library of apps pre-installed, including the Epiphany browser and Rhythmbox music player. Customized settings will let you further tweak the purity level to suit your zeal -- so, if you're thinking about grabbing the upcoming alpha, check the source for more info.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Firefox 4 usage share graph
Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla's noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4's meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the 'Important' Windows Update rolled out. It's hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out -- did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 -- a great browser by almost every metric -- was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it's serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Netatmo Introduces the First Personal Weather Monitoring Station for iOS

We’ve all seen those little desktop weather stations that show the indoor and outdoor temperatures and maybe humidity.  They’re useful, but there are many other parameters that could prove more useful in an urban environment, like air quality.  Netatmo has introduced the Personal Urban Weather Station, the first to use your iPhone, iPod touch, or [...]

PayPal updates Android app with revamped UI, better account management

PayPal updates Android app with revamped UI, better account management

PayPal's been keeping itself quite occupied in the most recent months, with its newfangled Discover partnership and Card.io acquisition being at the forefront of it all. Today, however, it's something aimed at the Android crowd: the Google-approved application's hit a novel numerical version. So, what's new exactly? Most notably, there's a complete user interface facelift, which, according to PayPal, vastly improves the overall design and navigation within the app -- not to mention, it's taken on darker-colored theme. In addition to the fresh UI, the eBay-owned service now makes it easier to scan payment cards while on the go, as well as giving users an improved overview of their available, pending and total balance. Now, if only this took care of all those famed frozen account woes, we'd be all set.

New Kindle Fire leaked, slim on specs

Android Central

A shot of what's supposed to be the next Kindle Fire has leaked, though we don't know much about what's going on with this tablet. Apparently both a 7-inch and a 10-inch model are planned, but no word on how they'll compare in terms of specs or price. The overall software will be lighter on chrome, according to the source.

Amazon made a pretty big deal about the original Kindle Fire being out of stock earlier today, suggesting that these new models aren't too far into the future - maybe even next week. One would expect that the next generation of the Kindle Fire would try to be just as affordable as the previous version, but that's entirely up to speculation.

Kindle Fire owners, are you feeling ready for an upgrade? What would you like to see in the next Kindle Fire?

Every Phone Should Have This Windows Phone 8 Childproofing Feature [Windows Phone 8]

Kids these days just can't keep their grubby hands off smartphones and tablets. Once they see the big shiny screen, it's over. Boogers wiped on your home button, drool trail on the display—it ain't pretty. But what's worse is if they accidentally tap into your phone's personal information: private pictures, salacious text messages, big giant curse words and other awful adult things you do during your alone time. That's why every phone should have this upcoming feature in Windows Phone 8: Kid's Corner. More »
