Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Memo to Twitter: Failure Is No Longer Amusing

Twitter is back in action after a data center failure caused worldwide outages for many of its users Thursday. Starting around 8:30 a.m. PT, Twitter users who tried to access the site were greeted with a partially coded message that read, "Twitter is currently down."

TripAdvisor app for Windows Phone 7 now available

tripadvisor windows phone 7TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related -- from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that's a neat feature, it's also a bit of a downer -- because, really, it's about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn't already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn't work with WP7 at the moment).

While it's nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it'd be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you're frequently on the go -- at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.

How to access iTunes in the Cloud TV shows on your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and PC

How to access iTunes in the Cloud TV shows on your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and PC

iTunes in the Cloud is part of iCloud, and lets you re-download or stream your previously purchased TV shows -- and music, movies, iBooks, and apps -- from your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Apple TV, or Windows or Mac PC. If you switch devices regularly, or don't want to take up space storing TV shows you watch infrequently, iTunes in the Cloud lets you keep everything you want to watch close by, and watch it whenever you want, wherever you want. You just have to make sure you're logged into your iTunes account, and you're good to go.

Here's how to access iTunes in the Cloud TV shows from your device.

Note: Only 10 devices can be authorized for iTunes in the Cloud at any one time. For more on authorizing, managing, and changing your iTunes in the Cloud devices, see:

How to purchase TV shows from iTunes

How to re-download apps, music, movies, and TV shows with iCloud

If you're new to iOS or iTunes, purchasing TV shows for your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, and even your Mac or Windows PC is easy. And once you do, you can access them from any of your devices with just a few taps and clicks.

  1. Launch the iTunes app from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

How to stream TV shows to your Apple TV

How to access tv shows in the cloud from your Apple TV

TV shows, as the name implies, were intended for televisions. If you're not away from home, and if your HDTV isn't otherwise occupied, there's no better way to watch them than on the big screen courtesy of your Apple TV. Because the Apple TV only has 8GB of on board storage, rather than downloading TV shows, it simply streams them directly from iCloud.

  1. Using the Apple TV Remote, navigate to the TV Shows section.
  2. Go to the Purchased section along the top.
  3. Navigate to and click on any of the TV shows you see listed.
  4. Navigate to and click on Play.

How to re-download TV shows to iTunes on Mac or Windows PC

If you've switched computers, added an additional computer, or simply lost a hard drive or corrupted an iTunes Library, there's no more need to panic about your TV shows. You can re-download them again and again.

  1. Launch iTunes
  2. Click on iTunes Store in the side bar on the left.
  3. Click on TV Shows in the content bar at the top
  4. Click on Purchased in the Quick Links column on the right.
  5. Click the TV Show series you want to choose from.
  6. Click the individual episode you want to to download.

You can sort by Seasons or Episodes, and view "Not on this computer" to help more easily find the exact show you're looking for.

Once your episode has downloaded, you'll be able to find it under TV Shows in the sidebar to the left.

How to get more help with iCloud

If you still need help with re-downloading apps, games, iBooks, music, TV shows, or music to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, or any other iCloud feature, head on over to our iCloud Forum and ask away!

Facebook Wants to Be Your Instapaper Now, Too [Facebook]

It must be flattering to be Marco Arment, creator Instapaper and pioneer of putting articles aside to read in the bathroom. His app's imitators are legion, and have grown by a very intimidating one: Facebook. Its "save for later" feature is no Instapaper. But it may not have to be. More »

Nexus 7 dock and covers leak, promise high style in small sizes

There have been teases here and there that Google's Nexus 7 was going to get a full, official accessory treatment from ASUS, but actual details have been scarce. Consider ASUS' cover blown, almost literally. Presentation files finding their way to Nordic Hardware show the known Smart Case-like, $20 Travel Cover that's already lurking on the ASUS and Google websites, but they also spoil a leather Premium Cover that will reportedly cost $40. As for a cradle to round out the set? While the company had previously confirmed that a dock was coming, we're now getting a glimpse of the $50 Nexus Dock's super-simple wedge design and audio output. With the exception of the Travel Cover, the accessory bonanza is pegged by the slides as arriving in late August -- just in time for that last-gasp summer vacation.

Update: Nordic Hardware has since taken down its original post "at the request" of an unnamed party.

Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

boomshine
One click; just one single well-aimed click. That's all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It's been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic - it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn't get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don't get points for trying.

There's no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I've found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!
